In July 2012, medical device manufacturer Stryker announced a recalling of two artificial hip implants—the Rejuvenate and the ABG II—because the modular necks on those devices are prone to fretting and corrosion, which can cause the patient’s tissue around the implant to swell and become painful. More than 2,000 people have been directly affected by the recall.
The Stryker ABG II Modular-Neck Hip Stem is a metal-on-metal hip replacement device. The U.S. FDA approved it in November 2009 via its 510(k) premarket notification process, a streamlined mechanism that allows artificial implant manufacturers to clear their products without clinical trials.
